THE Toyota Hilux is one pick-up that has always been copied by other pick-up makers but never been equalled. For two decades, the Hilux has dominated its segment with its sophisticated design, outstanding performance and refined comfort, making it the preferred choice by many for leisure and work.
Available in both diesel and petrol engines, the Toyota Hilux also comes in single and double cabins. In Nigeria, however, petrol engine version is more popular than the diesel due to the quality of diesel available in the country.
The Hilux 2.7 petrol engine features VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent) with a roller rocker arm, which delivers increased torque and output, better fuel economy and reduced emissions. This engine also delivers 118 kw of power at 5200rpm and 241Nm of torque at 3800rpm. With this, the Hilux meets all your demands for power on any terrain. There are also three diesel engines in the Hilux line-up.
Toyota Nigeria Ltd, representatives of Toyota Motor Corporation in Nigeria recently added the automatic transmission version of the Hilux to its range in Nigeria which also become an instant hit. The automatic transmission version has since last year become the most sought after model in the pick-up segment with long list of customers waiting to grab one.
Most of the customers had attributed the high demand to adaptability to traffic situation and convenience and ease of automatic transmission drive. This new transmission has placed the Hilux ahead of competition in the country.
Hilux is available in four-wheel and two-wheel drive. It’s all-round performance is built on the use of advanced Toyota technologies such as the high rigidity frame and the part-time four-wheel drive system. They deliver robust strength and reassuring power to easily handle varying terrain and conditions.
For instance, on 4WD models, a part-time two speed transfer lets you choose the mode that best matches the road condition. While the H2 mode is ideal for regular driving on city streets and highways, the H4 mode is suitable for rainy, slippery conditions. L-4 mode provides especially strong traction when required.
Also, Hilux high rigidity frame, structure provides a strong platform for its performance. Use of computer aided engineering (CAE) to optimise the body structure helped to reduce noise and vibration and contributes to excellent stability and control.
The Hilux is fitted with double wishbone front suspension with coil springs while the rear suspension is a rigid axle type with leaf springs. Both contribute to the car’s outstanding ride comfort and handling.
Though a pick-up, the Hilux boasts the comfort of sedan. It provides car-like quiet and comfortable space with numerous storage spaces.
The audio system features a radio, CD player and four speakers. The USB/mini-jack enables a portable music player to be connected and enjoyed over the vehicle speakers. The Hilux comes with Toyota safety standards, including anti-lock brake system, airbags, seat-belts, head and leg impact protection structure, etc.
