Cross River ‘ll produce more young athletes, says coach

Cross River grassroots athletics development coach, Earnest Tshe lamented that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria denied products of the the programme the opportunity to test their prowess at the African Youth Athletics Championships in Warri, Delta.

Only five athletes from Cross Rivers made the Nigerian team to AYAC. Two of those athletes, Offonime Odiong Edidiong and Fabian Ime- Edoki won gold for Nigeria, in the girls 400m and boys triple jump respectively. But coach Tshe argued that there were some others that were left behind and most importantly, they were under the age category.

“We weren’t happy that only a few of our athletes made the team to the AYAC. It was surprinsing that after they were selected at the schools sports festival in port harcourt. We were informed that there would be another trial.

“We have athletes who could have won the Championships all the same. But we are not deterred, we will continue to work and produce more junior athletes,” said Tshe.

These athletes were discovered at the Cross River athletics school championships. The 2013 edition  has already commenced with meets at the local level.
