Minna — Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State yesterday urged Nigerians to learn the imperfections associated with democracy by tolerating one another, assuring that the country would soon wriggle out of its current challenges.
Aliyu spoke when the Corps Commander, Artillery, Nigerian Army, Gen. Kalaye Kwaskebe paid him a visit, noting that countries that have been practicing democracy over the years were still with managing and tolerating their imperfections.
He however, commended the Nigerian Army for restricting themselves to their professional callings in the face of insecurity in parts of the country and called on them to maintain that tempo.
‘’We should thank the Army for protecting our nascent democracy despite our imperfections. Even the countries that have been practicing democracy for the past 200 years still manage and tolerate their own imperfections and Nigerians should also learn to be tolerant”, the governor said.
Aliyu however, assured the Military of the support of his administration in combating insecurity in the state just as he described the residents as peace loving people who would not do anything that could breach the insecurity of the country.
Replying, Gen. Kwaskebe thanked the state government for its support to the Army unit located in Kontagora in the state but pleaded for more.
He said the population of soldiers at the military Cantonment, Kontagora had trippled as it was not only training combatants but anti terrorist training centre which has made the various social amenities in the barracks overstretched and grossly inadequate.
Kwaskebe particularly spoke of acute scarcity of water to the barracks which he said was now forcing the inhabitants to source for water from any available pond which he said was unhealthy, even as he assured the people that the Army was equal to the task protecting lives and property of the residents.
