Minister of sports and chairman of the National Sports Commission, Abdulahi Bolaji has hinted on plans by the sports ministry to streamline the thirty-seven sports federations and focus only on sports that Nigeria can excel at the global stage.
The sports Minister is bent on going ahead with this decision barley six months to London 2012 Summer Olympics.
According to him, by doing this the country will be able to achieve more.
Speaking to brilafm.net, Abdulahi said if ten sports can be identified via a consensus, then there’s no point spreading resources in a bid to carry everyone along, with little assurance on winning medals.
“We have 37 federations and I don’t think there is any country in the world that is not known for a particular sport,” he said, pointing out that “instead of spreading our lean resources across all federations with little or nothing to show for it, we can ask ourselves as a nation, which sports we think we have better chances of performing well in.
“With a consensus, we can identify the profitable ones and focus more on them”.
