SNG threatens revolt over subsidy

By Caleb Ayansina
ABUJA—Save Nigeria Group, SNG, yesterday, threatened to revolt against the increment in the pump prices of petroleum products by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government.

The group said there was nothing like subsidy in the first place, but lack of political will to fix refineries and pervading corruption.

The group, in a statement issued after its emergency meeting in Abuja, directed all its members and affiliates across the country to mobilise people for mass action against the government, while describing the policy as “unwarranted and inhumane.”

SNG asked the government to tell Nigerians how it arrived at the initial price of N65 per litre, as findings had shown that among the other oil-producing nations and members of OPEC, petroleum products costs highest, even at N65/litre, in Nigeria.

It added that the actual cost of petroleum product per litre in Nigeria was N40.02 and that locally-refined products could not be sold at international price.

The group said President Jonathan shall be held responsible for the death of any Nigerian who have so far been murdered or might still be martyred by security agents on the directives of government, while protesting against this hike in fuel prices.
