FG asked to ascertain fuel consumption level

By Godfrey Bivbere

LAGOS – The Federal Government has been called upon to ascertain the exact volume of fuel that is consumed daily in the country to determine what should be paid as subsidy to importers of the product.

Making the call in Lagos, a maritime consultant, Mr. Francis Omotosho, said the major issues was for government to know the companies that are importing the product for a particular period.

Omotosho said there was need for government to make the list of importers known and the quantity of the product brought in by each of them ahead of time.

He pointed out that this was the same method applied by the Ministry of Finance in the maritime sector, which helped control the use of foreign exchange for the importation of cargoes.

The system, he further explained makes it mandatory for every importer to make a declaration of what he is import even before the order was placed for the goods.
