GOMBE- The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, is to establish distress call centres for corps members throughout the country to enable serving members to contact the NYSC and other security agencies in times of trouble so as to ensure their safety.
NYSC Director –General, Brigadier-General Thomas Okerie- Affia, said this Wednesday, when he visited corps members undergoing orientation course at Mallam Sidi, Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State.
He spoke against the backdrop of the killing of some corps members in some Northern states after the post-presidential election, during which no fewer than 850 persons were murdered in some states, especially Bauchi and Kaduna .
Okerie-Affia also said that with the combined efforts of the military, police, civil defence among other security agencies, corps members’ lives would be adequately protected.
He however charged the corps members to always be on the side of the law by respecting the various norms and traditions of their host communities during their primary assignments.
On the distress call centre, Brigadier Gen. Okerie Affia said that such centres ‘’will enable the NYSC track and send immediate relief to any corps member who may be in danger within the shortest possible time.
