TRADE Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has said the move by the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF to amend the constitution to remove labour and related matters from the exclusive list to the concurrent list, is aimed at killing the labour movement.
Chairman of the Rivers State Council of TUC, Chika Onuegbu , in a statement said, “The move by the Nigerian governors forum to amend the constitution so as to remove labor and all labor related matters from the executive federal legislative list to the concurrent list, is aimed at effectively killing the Nigerian labour movement as the representative of the less privileged people.
This move although masked under the so called minimum wage a crisis is actually aimed at silencing the voices of the Nigerian people.”
“We are happy to remind the NGF that without the exemplary leadership and unparallel tenacity of purpose of the Nigerian workers under the visionary leadership of their leaders in the face of intimidating circumstances and unrestrained exhibition of awesome instruments of terror during the dark days of military dictatorship the present democracy may not have come when it came, or might even have eluded us.
We therefore appeal to the NGF and National Assembly to be careful so that they do not destroy the labour unions that provided the opportunity / platform for them to be where they are today.”
