Governor’s Cup qualifying starts

The  long and anxious wait is finally over for the hundreds of tennis players wishing to hit limelight as the qualifying round for the Governor’s Cup Futures 1 serves off today at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan Championship begins today.

Registration of  players, ended yesterday, while the qualifying games hold today and tomorrow before the Main Draw, serving off on Monday.

There is no doubt that this year’s tourney will be keenly contested judging from the calibre of the players coming from all part of the world with their high rankings.

Capkovic Kamil of Solvakia, who is ranked No. 292 is leading in the men’s event.

Other players in Lagos for the competition are Indian Rastogi Karan (324) and Boy Westerhof of Holland (440). Idoko Candy, who is ranked 1361, is leading Nigerian boys to the Governor’s Cup this year. He is  joined by Enosoregbe Kingsley (1634), Shehu Lawal (1634), Olawepo Bolaji, Monday Igbinovia, Adamu Sanni andAlade Kehinde Maku Sunday, Akiangbade Pekun, Mbanu Onyeka, Ayeni David and Yussuf Ganiyu.

Only Abinu Fatimah and Akingbade Ronke registered among Nigerian ladies for the Governor’s Cup, while others will be playing courtesy of the wild cards to be given by the NTF
