Following complains about dredging activities in the country and its likely effect on the environment, Dredge Skills and Marine Training Centre is to hold the 5th edition of the Nigerian Dredging Summit slated for Calabar this month to discuss the issue extensively.
According to Mr Edmund Chilaka, the coordinator of the Summit in a press release noted that the fear that a tsunami could occur in Lagos due to dredging activities has been refuted by the Dutch resource person commissioned by the organizers to x-ray the likelihood of such an event, and the details will be thoroughly discussed in the presentation at this summit.
Chalaka also noted that other highlights of the event include two essential short courses in basic survival at sea and the use of life-saving appliances plus a dredge master safety procedure onboard dredgers course.
In view of the shortage of well-trained and skilled dredge masters, engineers, deckhands and other dredge crews in Nigeria, the short courses will involve practical sessions on board a dredger and a swimming pool with a concluding self-appraisal assessment.
The release also noted that the summit delegates shall be taken on a tour of the First Government House in Nigeria which is located in Calabar at the Slave Museu.
