The curtain finally falls today in Awka, Anambra State, when the remains of the late Lady of Songs, Mrs. Christy Essien-Igbokwe, are laid to rest.

The funeral marks the end of week-long activities put together by a burial committee to celebrate the life and times of the former musician and actress who died at 50.

Part of the activities to celebrate the Lady of Songs included, a football tournament between entertainment writers and sports writers on the one hand and Nollywood practitioners and musicians on the other.

Both competitions were sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.

The late musician was also honoured with a red carpet event that featured the best of entertainment practitioners who came out in their hundreds to pay their last respects. Essien-Igbokwe was also honoured with a public lecture at the National Theatre where she was also laid-in- state.

Her funeral rites in Lagos climaxed with a Church service at Archbishop Vinning Anglican Cathedral while her remains were flown to Awka, Anambra State for the interment. She will be buried in Awka, the State capital ltoday.

A great musician and accomplished actress, Christy Essien-Igbokwe started her professional career in Aba in the mid ’70s when she joined the Masquerade crew and played the role of Akpenor the troublesome wife of the self-acclaimed millionaire poolstaker, Jegede Shokoya.
