LAGOS – MARITIME Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, has petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan, alerting him of plots by some highly placed individuals in the Presidency to establish another Maritime Security and Safety Agency after it was unanimously rejected by stakeholders at a public hearing in 2010.
There are strong indications that the rejected draft bill could be represented to the Senate tomorrow by the promoters.
The petition by President-General and Secretary-General, Comrades Tony Nted and Aham Ubani, respectively, copies of which were sent to the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and Minister of Transport, the union threatened to shut down the nation’s ports should the National Assembly go ahead to approve the rejected agency.
In the petition by President-General and Secretary-General, Comrades Tony Nted and Aham Ubani, respectively, the union said: “We wish to draw you urgent attention to the unacceptable move by the Presidential Implementation Committee on Maritime Safety and Security (PICOMSS), to establish another Maritime Security and Safety Agency in spite of opposition to the move.
In January 2010, a draft bill caption Maritime Security (Establishment) Bill 2009 was proposed.
