Lawmaker alleges marginalisation of Itsekiri

By Emma Ovuakporie
ABUJA—Mr. Daniel Reyenieju, representing Warri Federal Constituency, Delta State, yesterday, said the Itsekiri nation was the most marginalised in Nigeria as it has only five officers in the Nigeria Police Force.

The lawmaker said his investigations into the matter revealed that there was only one Assistant Commissioner of Police , ACP, two Superintendents of Police, SP, and two Assistant  Superintendent of Police, ASP, that were of Itsekiri extraction in the Police.

In a chat with Vanguard, Reyenieju said: “I initially thought the Itsekiri on their volition never liked being recruited. But immediately the Police published that it needed men for the service, I re-published it in our local journal and more than 70 Itsekiri applied. It means all along they were applying but were rejected.

“Now that is glaring that they were deliberately rejected because chief executives and directors-general are not from Itsekiri, the Federal Character Commission, when finally constituted, must look for ways and means to right this abnormality.

“Nigeria is searching for peace and without equitable distribution of recruitments into our organisations, that peace may elude us.”

He further explained that “records abound of how local councils that have chief executives employed over 147 recruits into a particular organization while some states do not even have one recruit in that organization.”

“This is an unfortunate situation as the relevant section in the constitution simply stipulates that all appointments should be equitably distributed so in the case of my people where is the equity, people should know that every ethnic group be it Urhibo, Isoko, Ijaw, Jukun are represented here in the House and we must get to the bottom of this matter no what it would take us.”

“It took the Itsekiri race 50 years to produce two ministers in the persons of Omimiejo Okotieboh and Oritsejafor, may be it will take us another 50 years to produce two more, meaning that in 100 years we produced four ministers, that should not be the case if we are practicing true federalism.”

It would be recalled that the House last Wednesday passed a resolution that all personnel, recuitment and infrastructure allocations between 1999 till date would be investigated by the Reps.

Towards this direction, it was also resolved that once the committee on Federal Character is constituted action should start immediately.
