Nigeria’s rave of the moment in 100m Ogho Egwero on Wednesday ran 10.4 seconds to win the final of AFN Golden league but he ended up a sad runner.
For an athlete to win the jackpot he has to win all the five legs of the Golden League to be pact of the 2M Jackpot. Egwero won four out of the five and lost out. The only one he missed was due to his absence.
Ignorantly, he thought that winning four out of the five races would earn him the 100M jackpot. He therefore went to Morocco for an international meet for which he performed below expectation.
”Originally, the league was to be a six leg league and when it was reduced to five they did not inform us that it was now 5 over 5 for one to win the jackpot.
It is sad. I feel cheated out of this,” Egwero fumed. He had planned not to run yesterday but respected the presence of AFN President Solomon Ogba and his own father. The Golden League was colourful and competitive although men returning over 10 seconds in the 100m doesn’t excite any more.
Brown Ebewele, the buff of Nigerian track and field was emotional when he met Sunday Uti and Moses Ugbusien and he told stories of their feat at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where the 4X4 relay team won bronze. Tobias Igwe was also among the respected names in track and field that graced the event.
