President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday took his consultation with stakeholders ahead of the elections to Warri where he met the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and solicited the support of Christians in the election.
The President is also expected to meet with the leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, in Kaduna tomorrow Sunday, where he will also beg for votes from the Muslim community.
At the Warri meeting with the leadership of CAN led by the body’s President, and General Overseer of the Life of Bible Church, Warri, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President admonished the Christian leaders to always pray for his administration and the country as a whole.
He said that as a candidate and a sitting President, he had onerous task of ensuring free and fair elections where every vote will count.
President Jonathan said if voted in the coming elections, he would cut importation of generators by at least 90 per cent over the next four years.
He stressed the imperative of continuity in government, adding that current investments in the petrochemical industry, the gas revolution he launched on Thursday and agriculture would stimulate the local economy and create thousands of jobs for the youths.
He said “we feel you should sell us to your followers because we mean well for this country. We are here to plead with you to continue to pray for peace of this country and lastly that we are interested. We mean well for this country and believe we are the best pair and by the grace of God, if we get there, we will not disappoint the christian family’.
Responding, CAN President, Pastor Oritsejafor assured the President and Vice President, Namadi Sambo of the body’s continued support for the administration.
“As Christians leaders, we are already proud of you because you are one of us. My fellow leaders want me to tell you that they are proud of you. We want you to go ahead and we will continue to pray for your success.
“I want to say to Nigerians that we believe in the unity of this country. We believe there are great potentials, there are great people. We trust God will give you what you desire. My God will be with you’, Pastor Oritsejafor prayed.
Similar meetings have been held with stakeholders in the entertainment industry, NURTW, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria, ACOMORAN, in Lagos.
Also on the card for consultations in the days ahead are interest groups such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) among many others.
