CHOLESTEROL (Another Silent Killer)

Are you overweight?

A waist line of more than 31 inches for women and 35 inches for men is overweight and highly prone to degenerative diseases like diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol etc.

We hear about cholesterol almost daily. High cholesterol affects millions of Nigerians yet, there are probably more misconceptions about it than any other body element.

High cholesterol, by itself, is a major factor for coronary heart disease but it is also linked to stress. People under stress with cholesterol levels of over 240 are three times as likely to get heart trouble. Cholesterol itself is a fat-related substance essential to every body function and also is affected by everything you eat. Over-indulgence in artery-clogging foods like trans or saturated fats and sugars (especially if your metabolism is sluggish) leads to serious deposits in arterial linings. IF YOUR DIET LACKS FIBRE, CHOLESTEROL BECOMES IMPLICATED IN GALL STONES.

There are two kinds of cholesterol found in the blood (dietary cholesterol comes from dairy products and meat, and like saturated and trans-fats, could be a factor in high cholesterol). High density lipo-protein or good cholesterol (LDL/VLDL), low density lipo-proteins or bad cholesterol are found in blood stream.

Oxidizer LDLcholesterol poses a particular health hazard to the heart, because it significantly contributes to arterial plaque accumulation and to high blood pressure. Triglycerdes are sugar-related blood fats that usually appear on your thighs and hips. High triglycerides cause blood cells to stick together, impairing circulation and leading to heart attack. If your triglyceride level is above 250, heart attack risk is twice as high.

WHAT LEVEL SHOULD IT BE?

Cholesterol screening results could be complicated; pay close attention to your test results and beware.

Some cholesterol-lowering drugs are actually harmful. NEW RESULTS ON SATIN DRUGS, WIDELY TOUTED FOR CHOLESTEROL REDUCTION, SHOW THAT IF YOU TAKE THEM WITHOUT MAKING HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES, DEATH RATE, HEART ATTACK OR HEART DISEASE IS NOT REDUCED.

LDL (low density lipoprotein) the “bad” cholesterol, carries cholesterol through the blood stream for cell-building but leaves the excess behind on artery walls. Signs that this has happened are poor circulation with cold hands and feet; leg cramps; difficult, asthmatic breathing; dry skin; and, hair.

Ideal LDL levels are less than 130mg/dL. Levels of 130mg/dL to 150mg/dL are border-line high. Over 160mg/dL is high. High LDL cholesterol accumulated on arteries walls can eventually block the flow of blood to your heart or brain, resulting in a heart attack or stroke. The first sign you see may be uncomfortable heart palpitations and dizziness.

HDL (high density lipoproteins), the good cholesterol, helps prevent harmony of the artery walls by transporting excess LDL cholesterol to the liver for excretion as bile. Ideal should be 60mg/dL; levels below 35mg/dL are too low.

Triglycerides increase density of the LDL cholesterol molecules. Ideal triglycerides levels are less than 200mg/dL. From 200 to 399mg/dL is considered border-line. Levels 400mg/dL and above are too high and dangerous to health.

Total cholesterol levels:

It should be less than 200mg/dL. Levels 200 to 239mg/dL are border-line; over 240 is high and puts one at an increased risk for heart disease. If cholesterol levels are high, you need to go on a cholesterol reduction diet.

Diet and lifestyle therapy:

The biggest contributor to high blood cholesterol level is saturated fat and over-eating. Focus on plant foods brown rice and egg whites. Reduce bad fats and add dietary fibre. Reduce sugar to lower triglycerides.

Foods that lower cholesterol:

Olive and canola oil (try canola and red palm fruit oil for cooking 08072444513), walnuts, yams (boiled), oats, high fibre fresh fruits, beans, Oolong tea, green tea etc.

Substantially, avoid animal fats, red meats, fried foods, fatty dairy foods and refined foods. And, eat smaller meals, especially at night.

l Reduce body weight if over-weight. Do a detox or cleanse fat and sugar. If you are 5kg overweight, your body produces an extra 100mg of cholesterol every day.

l Exercise is preventive medicine for cholesterol. Even if you cut your fat, you need to exercise to lower your LDLs. Take a brisk, daily walk or other regular aerobic exercise of your choice. Don’t get enough fibre? Add ground flax seed to your drink.

lHerbs like ginger, cinnamon, cayenne help zap cholesterol and those are all in the “Body Perfect Cleansing & Healing Cocktail” drink.

lBoost you anti-oxidant in-take by cooking with carotino canola and red palm fruit oil.
