Three mobile policemen were feared seriously injured yesterday in Kaduna, after they were knocked down by a Toyota pick-up van of the Kaduna state security outfit, Operation Yaki, on the convoy of Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo.
Sambo and his wife, Amina, were in Kaduna to pertake in the ongoing registration of voters by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
According to an eyewitness account, the driver of the Operation Yaki vehicle identified as Seargent Musa, with number plate AH 468 MKR, apparently lost control of the vehicle near the Ribadu Crescent registration unit and rammed into the three policemen who were on duty along Tafawa Balewa Way.
Colleagues of the injured policemen took away their arms before ferrying them into another vehicle which took them to an unknown hospital.
But Kaduna state Police Public Relations Officer, Aminu Lawal, who confirmed the incident noted later that the policemen were treated and discharged from the hospital.
Sambo who spoke with journalists moments after he was registered asked Nigerians to participate fully in the voters’ registration exercise.
Sambo said, “I came to Kaduna this afternoon to do my civic duty of registering for the oncoming 2011 elections and I am also pleased that the process took less than four minutes and therefore the processes have improved, I have been reliably informed that the software for finger prints have been replaced with a faster one and the corpers doing the exercise are now fully familiar with the system and it is going very fast.
“I will seize this opportunity to invite all eligible Nigerians who are 18 years and above to as a matter of responsibility and urgency make sure that they are registered.
“I want to assure Nigerians again that Mr. President, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very serious in ensuring that the 2011 elections shall be one man, one vote.
“It will be a transparent election and it will be one of the best elections in the world Insha Allah.
“The security of the youth corps members and all Nigerians who are going for registration is fully guaranteed and I want to assure Nigerians that they should go about their normal duties.”
