22 burnt to death in Asaba

ASABA—BARELY a week after 20 persons were roasted to death at Asaba along Benin-Asaba highway, a similar motor accident has occurred at Emuhu village near Umunede on the same highway. This time it claimed no fewer than 22 lives including university students.

A Toyota Urvan passenger bus burnt 22 passengers following an accident at Emuhu town near Umunede along the Benin-Asaba Expressway, yesterday

The accident which occurred, yesterday afternoon,  involved a Toyota Urvan bus bearing the inscription “The Young Motors” with number plate Lagos XW 308 MUS.

An eye witness said the bus which was on high speed lost control when the driver attempted  to overtake a Hummer jeep. It then caught fire and burnt the passengers to death.

Among the victims were two students of Delta State University, DELSU, Anwai campus whose personal documents were found at the scene of the accident.

The bus was still burning at press time.

Sector Commander of the State Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Luka Ikpi, told Vanguard that he was yet to be briefed about the accident. He said: “I have called the Agbor Unit command but they said they don’t have such information.”

Similar accident occurred last Thursday by Mariam Babangida Road, Asaba, involving a trailer belonging to Julius Berger with number plate, Abuja XL 987 ABC, which was heading towards Benin. The trailer lost control following a tyre burst and tumbled over the other side of the road before it caught fire. About 20 persons, including youth corps members, and Christmas holiday makers were roasted alive in the incident.
