Oshiomhole commissions 100 Edo City Transport buses

BENIN—EDO State Governor,  Mr Adams Oshiomhole in Benin commissioned over 100 airconditioned luxury intra-city buses  belonging to the Edo City Transport Limited.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor, who dedicated the buses to the downtroden in the society, said the purchase of the fleet of buses was in fulfilment of the promises he made in December 2009 while presenting the 2010 Appropriation Bill to the state House of Assembly on the need to strenghten the state’s transport company.

According to the Governor, “in that speech, I had enuciated my belief in the neccesity for  decisive state intervention in the provision of inter-city transpoprtation in the state. This is because our people, especially women and children encounter much stress in commuting within our cities.”

Saying that as a resullt of the old age of most of the mini-buses plying the roads of Benin, the Governor observed that  most of the accident victims in the hospitals in the state were people who rode on commercial motorcycles.

He also added that the commercial motorcycles’ mode of transportation creates traffic bottle necks and makes the cities look primitive, adding that his government consulted with  relevant experts on the the need to develop a holistic public transportation master plan for the state.

The result of that consultation, he said is the acquisition of the fleet of buses for the Edo City Transport Company ltd for intra city services.

The governor stated that the intra city bus services has been designated in line with the best standard of efficiency, safety and convinence of the commuters that can found in modern cities anywhere in the world.

He charged the management of the Edo City Transport Ltd to deploy the fleet of buses for immediate use in Benin_City  and other major cities in the state.

Besides, the governor charged the Board of Directors of the company not  to interfere with the daily runnig of the transport company, saying that he would hold the Managing Director of the company responsible for any lapses that may arise in the running of the company.Earlier in her address, the Managing Director of the Edo City Transport Ltd. Described the commissioning ofg the fleet of buses as historic and monumental just as she paid tribute to the doggedness an uncompromising efforts of the state governor to actualize his dreams and visions for the people of the state.

She disclosed that a credible operational business plan for the overall success of the transport company has been put in place by the management of the company.
