Former president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Dan Ngerem has expressed his reservation about Nigeria’s chance of winning medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, beginning on Sunday in New Delhi India.
Ngerem was speaking against the backdrop of ill-preparations made by the various athletes for the games. The country’s representatives arrived in India, with officials of the National Sports Commission expecting a basket of medals from the seven sports Nigeria is participating in.
But Ngerem has stated that Nigeria did not plan for the Games and therefore much should not be expected from the athletes.
“What kind of preparation did we put in place? None and so I don’t expect the athletes to do anything extra-ordinary.
“We had so many months to get ready, but the Sports Ministry and the National Sports Commission are only interested in the Nigeria Football Federation elections.
“As I’m talking to you, there are reports that the IAAF is threatening to ban Nigeria from all its organised competitions, because athletes who participated in the Abuja Grand prix last year have not been paid their entitlements.
“It is quite a thing of shame that the name of the country is being ridiculed all over the world.
“All these are happening because other sports have been neglected. The money needed to run athletics is just a fraction of what is spent on football”
