Commonwealth Games: Athletes storm Lagos for trials

Nigerian athletes who are yet to meet Athletics Federation of Nigeria set standards for Commonwealth Games are gearing up for a final trial arranged for them by the federation.

The come-prove-yourself event, is billed to hold at Yaba College of Technology mini stadium in Lagos.
Only  nine athletes out of the over 25 prospective medalists at the Games, are sure of making the New Delhi 2010 team. This is if the words of the AFN top shots are anything to go by.

“We are holding a closed trial for the athletes who are yet to meet our standards on Sunday and Monday next week. This is the final chance for those who are wishing to make the team,” said Sunday Bada who is the technical and performance director of the AFN.

He said that main area of concentration would be the selection of the 4×100 and 4x400m quartets. He said that only the women team have been guaranteed a place.

“We are looking to select our men relay teams. Hopefully if we can get two men that are doing 10.1 then the 4x100m men team is good to go. This also applies to men 4x400m, we don’t have a team just yet.
