Commonwealth Games athletes hope for the best

With a  month to go for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for October 3-14 in New Delhi, India, Nigerian athletes and coaches are hoping to knock themselves into proper shape for medal winning performance at the Games.

Some of the athletes invited to camp at Oghara, Delta State started trickling in and according to sprinter, Ogho-Oghene Egworo, there is a lot of work to be done, if he and his colleagues are to do better than, they did in Nairobi, Kenya during the African championships.

“We are going to camp with the hope of preparing well for the Commonwealth Games.
“The African Championships was not particularly an interesting episode for some of us. But that is gone now, we have to look forward to a better outing at the Commonwealth Games,” Egworo said.

Also speaking was coach Lati Obesean. He said that he was looking forward to a fruitful camping in Oghara.

“We expect majority of the athletes invited to participate in the camp. They started coming in from Wednesday, from the looking of things we are going to have a full house by this weekend,” said the coach.

However, those  who arrived the camp during the week, met no Athletics Federation of Nigeria official on ground to give a clear cut direction.

“Since we arrived we have not seen any AFN official. We don’t know what direction we are heading yet. But so far we have no feeding and accommodation problem,” said coach Tobias Igwe.
