AWKA—ANOTHER batch of Anambra Vigilance Service, AVS, has completed a training programme in Awka, with the coordinator of the service, Chief Kenneth Okonkwo, warning that any member found wanting in his duties would be shown the way out.

Okonkwo said at the passing out parade of the group that the training programme was part of the reforms going on in the system, adding that gone were the days anybody could claim to be a member of the AVS in any community in the state.

Under the new training programme, the volunteers received instructions from the police, the State Security Service, SSS, and other security operatives in the area of information management, intelligence surveillance, self-defence, use of firearms and evacuation of accident victims.

According to Okonkwo, with the rigorous training, members of AVS are now in a position to bring down the level of crime in the state.

He advised them to take their job serious, in view of the great importance the state government attached to security in the state.

He said his office would not take kindly to any negative report coming from any part of the state on the activities of the AVS, adding that they must be good ambassadors of the state wherever they found themselves.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Philemon Leha, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Glover Oshodi, at the passing out parade, warned that on no account should members of AVS detain any suspect or take the laws into their hands, adding that they must respect the fundamental rights of suspects.
