Riverine communities in Delta State have been commended for their acceptance and willingness to participate in the state poverty alleviation programme.
The Executive Assistant to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan on Micro Credit, Dr. Antonia Ashiedu, made the commendation in Warri, during the Delta South Senatorial District re-capacity building and re-sensitization programme.
The governor’s aide said the massive turn-out of people from riverine communities is a testimony of their acceptance of the programme.
She said Uduaghan’s administration believes in teaching a man to fish hence, thus the establish-ment of the Delta Micro Credit Programme to empower the poor and the economically disadvantaged.
Ashiedu said with the re-sensitization programme of Delta South, the empower-ment will now begin in earnest.
She observed that, despite the peculiar terrain of Delta South Senatorial area, the people of the area have been prudent and meritorious in the management of the micro credit loans.
Meanwhile, the Delta South Senatorial District Woman Leader, Evelyn Avro, said the interest free loan has drastically reduced unemployment in the state.
Avro, who described the state poverty alleviation programme as a carefully designed scheme at leap-frogging Delta State into an active commercial territory, said women in the area have become economically active due to the state government’s financial assistance.
