AKURE— SENATE President David Mark, weekend, in Akure said the amended version of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would be ready within the week.

Mark who was in Akure on a private visit to the state, said since the receipt of the feedback from the Houses of Assembly, the National Assembly would complete work on it within the week and passed it to  President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his assent.

According to him, “the Senate had received the feedback from the State Houses of Assembly, including Ondo and we are going to look into it and it is as good as amended, all the sections where we have 2/3 majority stand amended.”

Speaking on the rising spate of kidnapping in some sections of the country, he expressed his belief in the declaration of state of emergency on kidnapping to stop the menace.

    “The Senate had an extensive discussion on it and expressed concern about it. What is happening is as good as declaring a state of emergency in the kidnapping areas.

“People always make a mistake on declaring state of emergency, they think the governor must go, that is not the constitutional requirement, it is my serious belief that there must be a state of emergency on kidnapping in the country” Mark retorted.

The Senate President lambasted the Nigeria Police over its incompetence in stemming the alarming kidnapping trend “Nigerians are not happy at all, I am not also happy, that is the views of Nigerians”
