Another round of debate over who should be the coach of the Eagles if Swedish coach, Lars Lagerback turns down an offer of a contract extension, is set to engulf Nigerian football.
Technical Committee Chairman of the NFA, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi would on Tuesday brief the Executive Committee of the NFA and advise that they extend the contract of Lagerback who has gone home to consult with his family.
“We are impressed with the performances of Lagerback. We have approached him but he would communicate to us after consulting with his family. I will brief the Executive Committee on Lagerback and they will take it from thereâ€, Ogunjobi said.
But in the event of Lagerback not accepting to go along with Nigeria, the NFA would run into yet another storm over who should pilot the affairs of the national team. Sports Vanguard gathered on good authority that Austin Eguavoen is most favourably disposed to get the nod but there are others who believe that it is time to give the reins to Samson Siasia.
“Yes, Siasia is in the picture but Eguavoen has been national coach and is Lagerback’s assistant. Bringing Siasia might not augur well for the teamâ€, a top official of the FA reasoned.
Instead, he suggested that Siasia be brought in to handle the U-23 which he is accustomed to and allow Eguavoen tinker the Eagles while John Obuh remains with the U-20 team. Tuesday’s meeting of the executive Committee of the NFA would give clearer picture of who gets what in Abuja.
