Waziri files N5b libel suit against Newspaper

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  Mrs Farida Waziri has instituted a N5billion libel suit against a Lagos based newspaper.

Mrs. Waziri in the suit, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is seeking the sum of N5billion( Five Billion Naira only) as  special and general damages, for alleged  libel contained in a report in the newspaper edition of Sunday, 18th March, 2010,  entitled Waziri in fresh 10% scandal. She is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the organisation, its servants, agents, and or privies from further publishing, selling, distributing, or circulating the said offending words or any other libelous publication at all against the plaintiff.

Waziri’s counsel , Chief Adeniyi Akintola, SAN, claims in the suit  filed on May 12, 2010 that the offending story  appeared on the first and second pages of the newspaper.  Akintola said the story contained defamatory and libelous statements. He said the allegations leveled at Waziri in the publication are false in every material particular and are the figment of the imagination of the authors of the publication. Additionally, Akintola indicated  that the said  report,  “widely circulated and read throughout Nigeria, Europe, America, Asia and African countries and also on the internet by eminent colleagues, professionals of different fields, politicians, businessmen, corporate bodies, academics, friends, members of the international community, family members and the general public at large.”  Besides, he said that the report has also defamed Waziri and lowered her good reputation in the estimation of right thinking people generally.

Akintola further stated that Waziri, by virtue of her position as the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, “holds a position of public trust which requires that her integrity remains intact at all times and cannot close her eyes to the publication which had dragged her name in the mud and adversely affected her image in the estimation of right thinking individuals”. He explained that the resort to litigation is the only option available to Waziri to redeem her image in the estimation of right-thinking individuals who read the libelous publication.
