Tragedy struck over the weekend in Benin City when a police sergeant simply identified as Buba Jafaru was allegedly shut dead by his colleague Corporal Abdul Yakubu.
Vanguard gathered that the incident occurred that Sunday morning during a heated argument along the Benin-Akure Road at a police checkpoint near the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR).
He allegedly shot Sergeant Jafaru at close range and he died immediately before help could reach him.
According to an eyewitness, the sergeant was questioning the corporal over his conduct at the checkpoint, saying that they could not hear what exactly they were saying.
“The next thing we heard was a gun shot which left the sergeant deadâ€, he said.
Newsmen were however prevented by fierce looking mobile policemen from taking photographs of the police corporal who later burst into tears after the incident.
The corporal was however disarmed by his colleagues, who later handcuffed him and took him to Ekiadolor police station.
At the time of filling this report, it was however gathered that the corpse of the late sergeant had been deposited at a mortuary in an undisclosed hospital in Benin.
Efforts to confirm the incident from the state police command image-maker Peter Ogboi proved abortive as he was said to away for a meeting but a reliable police source however confirmed the incident.
The officer said the corporal has been detained and was being interrogated, adding that as soon as the interrogation was completed he would be charged to court for murder.
