By Chioma Obinna
Nigerian medical doctors have charged  President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently overhaul the nation’s poor health system as well as consolidate the peace process initiated by late President Yar’Adua.

The doctors who made the charge while expressing their condolences in separate telephone chats noted: “While we commiserate with President Jonathan and the family of late president, we wish to remind him that the only honour we can do to the memory of the departed is to conduct a credible election, fix the power problem and consolidate the peace process in the Niger Delta. These, were programmes dear to the departed.

Pouring encomiums on the late Yar’Adua, they described him as a sincere leader who fought gallant battle against death.  “Yar!`Adua was a man of peace, a strict adherent to rule of law, integrity and a true friend of the Nigerian doctors”. Lagos State branch Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Dr Adedamola Dada, acknowledged that ill health denied Nigerians of some benefits of late Yar’Adua’s governance further reminded those in authority of the need to improve the health system in Nigeria.

“As governor of Kastina State, he paid doctors more than any other public employer in Nigeria. His struggles with his health no doubt deprived Nigerians of some benefits of his governance, even then, history will certainly be generous to him.”

Erstwhile President of NMA, Dr. Prosper Igboeli  described Yar’Adua as a man peace. “I am sorry he has ended this way but I believe that it is better as the good Lord has called him to rest. I feel a personal loss. I shared in his vision. As President, late Yar’Adua was a man ready to serve the country but ill health did not allow him. But with the little he has done, we should appreciate him.
