A-Ibom Assembly gets new Speaker

By Tony Nyong
UYO—A new Speaker has finally emerged in Akwa Ibom State,  after the business of lawmaking in the state ground to a halt,  following a political impasse that eventually consumed the former Speaker, Mr Ignatius Edet.

The new Speaker, who was sworn in by the Clerk of the House is Mr Anietie Etuk, the former chairman of Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, who was until now, a member of the Forum of Ordinary Members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The former Speaker’s impeachment was reversed to resignation,  following Governor Godwin Akpabio’s intervention.

The motion for the former Speaker to resign was moved by Mr. Charles Mbong, member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo, and seconded by Mr. Iboro Udom, member representing Oruk Anam State Constituency. It was accepted by the House.

While the mood of the Assembly workers in the former Speaker’s office was that of sobriety, the other staff of the Assembly jubilated alongside with the lawmakers as the erstwhile Speaker walked out at the end of the session.
