Shell denies attack on facility

SHELL says it is not true that its facility was attacked in Buguma on Thursday night as alleged by a group, Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC) in an online mail to media men.
In telephone chat on the allegation, Spokesman of the Anglo Dutch oil giant, Mr Precious Okolobo said the multinational oil firm was not aware of any attack on its facility as contained in the mail from the group.

Meanwhile, the group, in its statement signed by Bakabio Walter, said they shattered an oil facility belonging to Shell on Thursday night. “At about 10:30pm yesterday, April 29, 2010, revolutionary fighters of the Joint Revolutionary Council of Niger Delta attacked and exploded the Shell Creek Manifold in Buguma as an announcement of the beginning of “Operation Boro”.

This in continuation of our armed campaign for the dissolution of Nigeria and the establishment of an independent Niger Delta state. This period of the celebration of Isaac Boro Day will be used to incapacitate the operators of the Nigerian state and bring them on their knees.

This is a child’s play compared to what is expected in the coming days. We shall strike in a way that the international community will be forced to come into this conflict.

In a related development, one of the three personnel of the NAFDAC that were kidnapped on their way from Abia state to Rivers state on Wednesday evening has been released. Mr Anslem Okonkwo of the Public relations unit of the agency made this known to the  Saturday Vanguard on phone.

It would be recalled that after they were taken hostage the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of five million naira for the release of each of the hostages.

Mr Anslem however said no ransom was paid for the release.

Also, the Rivers state chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, (ALGON) has condemned the abduction of the Chairman, Oyigbo local government area, Chief Precious Oforgi. Spokesman of the body who is also the Chairman, Asari Toru local government area, Mr Ojukaye Flag Amachree called for the unconditional release of the kidnapped Chairman.
