Umuahia—AHEAD of 2011 general elections, Abia State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has set out to increase its membership by readmitting those who left the party and re-register old members. To this end, the leadership of the party in the state has set up committees in the 17 local government areas of the state to monitor the on-going re-registration and registration aimed at beefing up its membership in preparation for the general elections.
The state leadership of the party led by Chief Ndidi Okereke has been touring the council areas as part of the sensitization exercise of the party in preparation for the 2011 elections. The team visited Umuahia North Local Government Area, where the membership re-registration/registration committee was inaugurated by the party chairman, Chief Okereke, who commended the party faithful for their steadfastness even in the face of intimidation by the ruling Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA, in the state.
He charged the committee members to ensure that registration materials get to every ward in the council area, so as to enable old members re-register while new members are also to be registered, in preparation for the coming elections. He charged them not to reject anybody who has come forward for registration.
Okereke also warned the party faithful that the only registration cards given to them by the committees are the authentic cards and urged them to ignore registration cards given to them by another other person.
