Youths obstruct assemblymen’s arrest

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—A mild drama ensued in Edo State yesterday as youths prevented the over fifteen armed mobile policemen from Abuja who stormed the state to effect the arrest of two Action Congress House of Assembly members, Kabiru Adjoto and another member (name withheld).

It would be recalled that an Abuja High Court had issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Adjoto, following the arrest of some armed thugs after Akoko Edo re-run election in August last year. However, Adjoto appealed the bench warrant and the motion is yet to be heard by the court.

The former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, had, at a PDP rally, boasted that Adjoto would be arrested over his alleged involvement in gun running during Akoko Edo election.
Adjoto was the AC candidate that defeated the PDP candidate during the re-run election in Akoko Edo.

Shortly after arriving the state, the mobile policemen pursued Adjoto and apprehended him at Ringroad, Benin City.
But a mild drama ensued when over 100 youths suddenly arrived the scene, querying the policemen.

The police officers were asked to identify themselves and they said they were from Abuja on the orders of the IG, but the youths, who suspected that the mobile police men may be kidnappers, almost striped the police officers naked.
But the policemen pleaded that they should be allowed to go back.

Vanguard learnt that matters became worse for the police officers when the youths found out that Edo State Police Commissioner was not even aware of their coming to the state to arrest the lawmakers.

Shuaibu, who spoke to Vanguard on the issue, asserted that “ nobody is afraid of going to see the IG of Police. But how can you comprehend a situation where some armed men started pursuing a lawmaker as if they are kidnappers? And that was how the youths came to save Adjoto.

“How can they say they came to arrest somebody when Edo State Commissioner of Police is not aware of their coming?
“The whole thing is politically masterminded and we will resist them. Abbe and Akogun feel that they will continue to live in Abuja, let them come home and face us. These are irresponsible people that feel they can continue to intimidate the people of the state.

“We are ready for them. They forgot that when they are through in Abuja, they will come home. Their leader ,who could not reach the position of commissioner of police, is the one sending them to come here to foment trouble. But the people will continue to resist them.”
