Ex-LG boss, two others get bail over false report

The former chairman of Orsu North Development Area of Imo State, Damian Okpara, and two others standing trial for allegedly giving false information to the Inspector-General of Police, have finally been granted court bail.

This followed an agreement between the accused persons and the norminal complainant, Chief Nelson Okpara to settle their differences out of court. The prosecuting counsel, Mr Obiora Ejiofor also acceded to the peace move. Chief Magistrate Sanusi Lamido granted the  accused persons bail in the sum of  N250,000 each.

They are also to provide a credible surety who is resident in Abuja. Chief Magistrate Lamido warned that any of the parties, who breaches the peace during the period of settlement would be sent to jail for six months without an option of fine.

This warning was sequel to a complaint by the counsel to Chief Nelson Okpara, that his client was constantly being harassed by agents of the accused persons. The case was adjourned to March 10, 2010 when the court will appriase the progress made between the parties.

Reacting to decision, counsel watching brief for Chief  Okpara, Mr.  Nwekpe said that what they wanted was justice for all.

Counsel to the accused persons, Mr, Kenneth Udeze, said his goal was to explore alternative dispute resolution method to resolving the matter.
