BENIN—ATTORNEY-General and Commissioner for Justice in Edo State, Dr Osagie Obayuwana, weekend gave reasons the state Chairman of the Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) in the state, Dr Samson Isibor, was arrested by the police last Monday.
He said Isibor was arrested after he accused the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, of having cultists in the state executive, adding that the insinuation that the state government was clamping down on opposition members was an attempt to distort the facts.
According to him, “I have never ascribed criminality to any public officer unless I was sure of my facts.
“Mr Isibor, whose antecedents nobody knows, has no right to say that members of the state exco are cultists and that we are responsible for the spate of kidnapping in Edo state.
“That is libelous in civil law and it also amounts to criminal defamation and as the state Attorney General, I wrote a formal complaint to the police, calling on Mr Isibor to substantiate his allegations.
“So, there is no truth to the allegation that he is being harassed because he is in opposition.”
The police, based on our written complaint, arrested him and obtained a statement from him under caution.
“He was granted bail and the matter will be charged to court for him to substantiate his allegation. Everything we have done is in pursuance to our believe in the rule of law.
“We have been in the opposition for decades. What we say we weigh it carefully before we say it. So, Isibor should learn that and that is why we want him to substantiate the allegation in court. This government is a responsible one and would never cow the opposition.â€
