IBADAN—FORMER Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lamidi Adesina said in Ibadan yesterday that Nigerians should pray to change the heart of President Umaru Yar’Adua so that he can initiate life-transforming programmes for them. By his own rating, he said, the administration had performed low and failed to lift Nigerians above poverty level. He was speaking on the occasion marking the end of Ramadan in Ibadan.
According to him, “A single government policy can change the fortune of Nigerians. Which good policy has President Yar’Adua introduced? I’m talking as a Muslim now. We should pray to Allah to touch his heart to make good policies that will help Nigerians out of povertyâ€.
Comparing the alleged lack-lustre performance of the president with that of Saudi Arabia, he recalled, “When I first went for Hajj in 1982 as a member of the House of Representatives, I slept in a dilapidated building in Medina. But when I went back in 2000, things had so changed that I could not recognize that place where the building was standing again. Then, Saudi Arabia had only four aircraft while Nigeria had 16. Now, Nigeria has none but Saudi has 200.â€
He added that the situation became worrisome when new findings by the United States Agency for International Department (USAID) revealed that 138.6 million out of the 140 million Nigerian population, are living below poverty line.
