Kidnapping: Tompolo’s aide, councillor, 13 others held

A dreaded militant operating in Edo State popularly known as “Egbema 1” and a Councillor in Ovia South West Local Government Area of the state are among the 15 suspected kidnappers arrested by men of the Edo State Police Command.

Police sources yesterday in Benin told Vanguard that the arrest of the 15 persons was sequel to the arrest of one Ereremu Otu popularly called Robert following a tip-off by the police on his activities.

It was further learnt that the arrest was effected in Gelegele, a riverine community in Edo State from where many kidnapped victims were said to have been ferried to Bayelsa State.

Besides, Ereremu was said to have confessed to the Police that he had been involved in three kidnappings in the state including that of the wife of Edo State Commissioner for Works, Mrs. Obayagbonna

He was also said to have told police interrogators that he ran into those that abducted Pastor Samuel Osaghae in Benin-City and was to blew the whistle on them when the abductors offered him N50, 000 to keep sealed lips just as he confessed that he was working under wanted militant leader, Tompolo, who he said was still in hiding.

According to the police source, Ereremu disclosed that Tompolo used to pay militants in different camps N34, 000 monthly hence they had to resort to kidnappings for more money.
