Doctors down tools in Asaba over female colleague’s kidnap

By Austin Ogwuda
ASABA—A female Medical Doctor attached to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba, has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen, who are asking for a N40 million ransom.

She is Dr. Esi Onwuemene, who is incidentally nursing a baby. She was abducted on Sunday at Inter Bau Junction Asaba, at about 4pm, almost the same spot where the Chief Accountant of Government House was robbed at gun point, recently.

Vanguard gathered that the kidnappers had initially asked for N10 million ransom when they established contact with the family but later raised it to N40 million when they discovered that the woman is a wife of a banker.

Worried about the kidnap, all the doctors at the Centre marched to Government House, Asaba, yesterday afternoon to protest the incident, condemning the level of insecurity. They called for urgent release of their colleague before they could return to work. The gates of the Government House were barricaded during the peaceful protest until the Chief of Staff, Mr. Solomon Areyenka came out to address them.

When Vanguard visited the hospital, many other staff were seen discussing the issue and are threatening to join the doctors in the strike.

The Hospital’s image maker, Mr. Nnamdi  Ogbogu confirmed the incident .
