THE prolonged petrol scarcity worsened in Lagos, Ogun and other states, yesterday, as independent marketers started lifting the product from private depots at N780 per litre, from N595 per litre, indicating an increase of 31 per cent.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Mosimi Depot, in Ogun State, on Tuesday, blamed the current fuel scarcity in the Southwest region of the country on the refusal of the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to make petroleum products available to its members three months after payment.

They were selling the product to desperate motorists at exorbitant rates of up to ₦1,000 to ₦1,400 per litre

Amid heavy gridlock, motorists and commuters in Lagos have lamented over the sudden scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, popularly called petrol, forcing an increase in transport fares by commercial bus drivers, the “Danfos and Koropes,” within the city.

The nation’s fuel shortage appears to have worsened, yesterday, as filling stations ran out of stocks, thus shutting their gates against motorists and other users of the product.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji on Wednesday said that the fuel scarcity rocking the state and nationwide is beyond his control.

“We urge Nigerians not to engage in panic buying, nor be enmeshed in unnecessary rush to buy products. As a country we have a storage of over 1.5 billion litres which can last us for over 30 days. More products are arriving and more products are on the high sea.”

Oil marketers under the umbrella of the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria, MEMAN, have started to swap petrol to tackle the petrol shortage nationwide.
