A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has condemned the pronouncement by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (retd), that the NCS would soon begin to impound vehicles being used in the country without Customs duties papers.

Plans by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) to start collecting duties from the owners of old vehicles on Nigerian roads have run into stiff opposition, as the Senate, reflecting the yearnings of the Nigerian public, last week called for its immediate suspension pending explanation of the policy by Customs authorities.

THE Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ Ikeja, Lagos has said it made N1.3 billion seizures of contraband goods in the months of January and February 2017 having deepened its anti-smuggling operations.

THE National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA) has lent its voice to the Senate on the controversial import duty policy on used vehicles imposed by the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, requiring it to impound vehicles on the road over importation documents regardless of how long the vehicles have been in use in Nigeria.

FOR shunning the directives of the Senate that it should suspend the proposed vehicle duty ultimatum due to begin on April 12, the Senate on Thursday summoned the Comptroller -General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali, rtd to appear before it on Wednesday next week.
