President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has slammed governors for establishing state universities they cannot fund.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has accused the Federal Government of deliberately under-funding public universities to make university education unaffordable for the children of the poor.

“You see today where somebody comes from the TETFund and say, ‘I have a project for you and I am going to be the contractor. We want an open project.”

“We can not fold our arms and allow the university system in Nigeria to be destroyed by successive transient governments. It is our historic duty as a union of intellectuals to defend the university education in Nigeria and protect knowledge production for future generations.”

MEMBERS of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Uyo Branch , ASUU-UUB, yesterday joined their counterpart nationwide to protest government failure to sign the agreement with the union over the past two years.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has alleged that the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government has failed to keep to the promise it made to Nigerians and the union to ensure an end to strikes in public universities.

The Federal Government delegation and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), are in a closed-door meeting to discuss the lingering crisis and avert a strike by the Union.

Akanmu also berated the insensitivity of the Federal Government towards the demands of the ASUU in the past few years, despite various agreements reached but not long fulfilled.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, has staged a peaceful protest lamenting the failure of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to review the condition of works for their members.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has said that no fewer than 400 members of its members had been sacked by proprietors of members’ institutions, who persecuted them for fighting for their rights and interest of university system.

“Furthermore, the Government has left the Nigerian Universities poorly funded. Allowing its infrastructural and staff development to the little funds coming from Tetfund which was meant to be an intervention agency rather than the main source of funding.”

The Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago Iwoye chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday staged a peaceful rally, to create awareness over the impending nationwide strike by the union.

Members of the Congress of University Academics who have been working despite the ongoing strike by ASUU are also affected by the nonpayment of salaries by the university authorities. 

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decried the silent treatment of the Federal Government (FG) and called for the implementation of the late Nimi Briggs-led renegotiated agreement.
