NIGERIA as the saying goes is a mere geographical expression. The task to turn that expression into a Nation has been seemingly lost and appears totally unrealisable. The last general elections proved this completely. Political parties were proven to be nothing better than paper tigers. When the shove came to shove, States that have supported a particular political party for 16 years dumped the party on the quick sand of tribal loyalty by as much as 97%. That to me was the end of party politics in Nigeria and the triumph of tribal loyalty.

Polemicist and dialectical logicians tend to agree that sanctimonious rantings, verbal acrobatics, sentimental effusions constitute negative building blocks in the march to nationhood and peace. Hence, the essayist and orator Cicero (106-43 B.C.) posited that “The rabble estimate few things according to their real value, most things according to their prejudices”. This is substantiated by the English playwright William Shakespeare that “A peace is of the nature of a conquest; for then both parties nobly are subdued and neither party loser”.

A promise is a declaration or assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen. In the build up to any election, focus is centered on the promises of the candidates seeking offices. Politics everywhere in the world operates within this premise. While many politicians dangle promises without intention to fulfil them after assumption of office, few among them make promises which served as covenant with the people for assessment when the need arises. To fulfil these commitments after inauguration, few politicians engage the people to build a road-map for actualization.
