THERE are strong indications that Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, any moment from now may make good its threat to shut down the nation’s ports over unpaid wages to dockworkers by about 21 firms for tonnage handled in off_shore operations for the past three years.

THERE is no doubt that many Nigerians and organisations are concerned over the alarming rate of unemployment especially among army of able-bodied college graduates in the country and several suggestions have been proffered as panacea.

The Director-General of the International Labour Organisation, ILO , Mr. Juan Somavia, has called on nations of the world to reactivate the real economy and create jobs as a way of emerging from the current global recession.

While most unions in the country are lamenting over dwindling income occasioned by declining membership, National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, is busy diversifying and expanding its income base. Like Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, and immediate past President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, would say, nobody achieves success through lamentation, but by confronting the object of lamentation head on.

NATIONAL Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, has commended four state governors, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, and Dr. Olusegun Mimko of Ondo state, for delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
