EXPECTATIONS are high from stakeholders in the education sector following General Mohammadu Buhari’s victory in the March 28, 2015 presidential election by INEC. The President elect, had, during his campaign, promised to restore the past glory of education in Nigeria and instill discipline in all schools. He said: “The first step to arrest this situation is re-orientation or re-branding. Students should study hard to get their high grades and not through bribery vis-à-vis sorting, or other kinds of examination malpractice and corruption.”

The United States Agency for International Development, USAID, and Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to commence training, teaching and research programmes in the state polytechnic with the establishment of Faculty of Agricultural Science and Engineering in the institution. According to the Media Relations Officer of the Institution, Mr. Tope Abiola, all machineries have been put in place by the institution to commence full academic programmes in Agricultural Science and Engineering.

Following the victory of General Muhammadu Buhari at the March 28 polls, concerned educationists and stakeholders have called on the President-elect to make education top priority in his administration, saying no nation can progress without educating her people. Nigeria’s education sector is currently battling with corruption, inadequate funding, low enrolment of students in basic education as Nigeria houses over 10 million out of school children, low quality of teachers at all levels of education, poor performance of students in public examinations, among others.

THE Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, gubernatorial aspirant, Mr Jimi Agbaje, has assured Lagosians that if elected, his government will focus more on basic primary education. He disclosed this at the Charloedony School family fun day celebration in Lagos. He noted that: “In Lagos State more of our children are failing O’ levels, there are more stuents failing than those that are passing, for that reason government must accept responsibility that there is something wrong with our education.
