EASTER bespeaks eloquently of sadness before joy, pain before gain and the treasures that are often cleverly hidden under human sufferings and tribulations. The truth is that even joy itself would lose its value or flavour if there is no struggle leading up to it.

This former four-lane road, which the Lagos State Government started reconstructing roughly two years ago, has been expanded into a ten-lane marvel with two flyover bridges at Mafoluku and Hajj Camp and at least one pedestrian overhead bridge at Ajao.

For many years, our politicians have neglected to build infrastructure and strong institutions which make life more abundant for the people. They have neglected the roads, schools, hospitals, and other social amenities. They have undermined and corrupted the judiciary, police, civil service, electoral bodies and other institutions.

Poisoning of dams and public water bodies should be treated as terrorism, crime against humanity and an attempt at mass murder. The punishment for it must be severe enough to deter evil-minded people from adopting such an inhumane approach in their tussles over land and other natural resources.

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, Mr. Amaju Pinnick, who disclosed that the football icon of the 1970s and 1980s needed at least $50,000 (about N18 million) for an urgent medical trip abroad to save his life, also said the Federation had already taken steps to ensure he got back to his feet.

In the first place, tattoos and dreadlocks are parts of the Nigerian and African culture. A lot of people wearing dreadlocks were born with them while others adopt them as their preferred hairstyle for reasons best known to them.

Apart from the neglected rail system which has burdened the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway beyond its intended load, also the neglect of the seaports towards the Eastern parts of the country (Warri, Koko, Port Harcourt, Onne, Ibaka and Calabar) because of undue preference for the Lagos Ports makes the near-total dependence of our people and the economy on the Expressway inevitable.

Hostility often arises when incumbent governors fail to secure a second term (as in the cases of Lagos, Adamawa and Bauchi states) or a departing governor fails to replace himself with a hand-picked successor (Imo and Ogun states) or an opposition political party is coming to power (Imo, Bauchi, Kwara and Adamawa states).

But the tide went against the 82-year-old sit-tight leader when he suffered a stroke in 2013 and became reclusive. He spent a lot of time in Swiss hospitals. His announcement of his intention to run again in the scheduled April 18, 2019 presidential election brought out Algerians to the streets in protest starting from February 22.
