Democracy as lootocracy: the Nigerian example (2)
Yet, our country has failed abysmally to live up to the lofty aspirations of the founding fathers of independent Nigeria. Our fundamental problem is the persistent phenomenon of agbata ekee leadership which has crippled everything. Corruption, ineptitude, hypocrisy, absence of accountability and transparency in governance, and lack of compassion for the less privileged etc have impeded the realisation of our developmental aspirations.
Democracy as lootocracy: the Nigerian example
It is well known that National Assembly members have perfected the art of manipulating federal budgets to satisfy their deadly insatiable appetite for primitive accumulation. Smart Adeyemi, chairman senate committee on federal character and inter-governmental affairs, is so disappointed with the avarice of his colleagues that he has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate federal legislators for corruption.
The choices before President Jonathan (2)
Jonathan’s predecessor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, frankly acknowledged that the elections that brought them to power were flawed. Therefore, the President is morally obliged to support electoral reforms that would eliminate the flaws. It is unfortunate that he has to work in concert with a National Assembly overwhelmingly dominated by crude Machiavellians actuated by instincts of primitive accumulation and political survivalism.
The theory of evolution and its creationist enemies(5)
I plead with my readers to bear with me one more time so that we can properly conclude our indepth critique of Wallace’s and Olatunji’s fallacies and deliberate misinterpretations of the theory of evolution. Last week we drew attention to the fact that Adam and Eve, the first human beings allegedly created directly by God were amoral ab initio, according to the book of Genesis.

However, Einstein never identified with any religion and he repeatedly distanced himsellf from the anthropomorphic deity of conventional religions. Although Marxist philosophy is not my area of specialisation, I know enough about it to be sure that Olatunji cannot provide any credible source to back his claim Karl Marx supported war on the ground that “betterment of the unfortunate might hinder the selection by survival of the fittest.â€
The theory of evolution and its creationist enemies(3)
It is not enough for a book to claim that its contents were divinely inspired: there must be independent evidence confirming that such inspiration actually took place and that what was written down is a faithful reproduction of the inspired message. Apart from the claims contained in scriptures, how can Olatunji and other believers differentiate between divine inspiration and other psychological processes that can be justifiably labelled ‘inspiration’?TO BE
The theory of evolution and its creationist enemies(2)
The best one can infer is a consortium of designers whose works were constrained by the materials available to them. The theory of evolution offers a superior explanation of biological complexity by spelling out in verifiable details how the mechanism of natural selection functions to eliminate organisms that could not adapt to the changing environment. What creationists see as products of design, therefore, are really the end results of evolutionary processes that have been occurring on earth relentlessly for about 3.5 billion years.
The theory of evolution and its creationist enemies
In The Guardian of March 25, 2010, two essays critical of the theory of evolution were published. The first one, written by “a teacher in Lagos,†Imelda Wallace, has the innocuous looking title “Science education and belief in evolution.â€
Ghaddafi’s proposal for conflict resolution: A critical analysis (3)
In it Gowon said: “I have now come to the most difficult part of the statement. I am doing it conscious of the great disappointment and heartbreak it will cause all true and sincere lovers of Nigeria and Nigerian unity both at home and abroad, especially our brothers in the Commonwealth.
Ghaddafi’s proposal for conflict resolution: A critical analysis (2)
Nigeria got her independence in 1960. Since then, the ruling elite has failed to harness the abundant human and natural resources in the country for the welfare of the citizens.
