NiRA elects new officers tomorrow, holds AGM

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NIRA, has said that all preparations were concluded towards its annual General Meeting and elections tomorrow in Ikeja, Lagos .

Vice President of the association, Mrs. Mary Uduma who confirmed this, also said that the AGM was coming after enough public enlightenment as stipulated in NIRA’s Constitution.

According to her, this AGM would provide members the opportunity to receive the annual financial report for the year ended May 31, 2009 and 2010 respectively, in addition to the auditor’s reports.

She however noted that the inability of the Board to present the 2009 report was due to the death of the pioneer president of NIRA, Engr Ndukwe Kalu, last September in Lagos which subsequently resulted in postponement of that year’s AGM.

She pointed out that the general elections into the Executive Board of NIRA, which had been due since 2009, constitutes the special highlight of the forthcoming AGM.

NIRA has a  ten-man Board of Directors including the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and six members of the Board.

The present Executive Board of NIRA had Engr. Ndukwe Kalu as president until his demise last year,  Mrs. Uduma – Vice President, Mr. Vincent Akhimien – Secretary,   Mr. Abimbola Olayinka – Treasurer, while Mr. Sunday Folayan,   Mr. Sikiru Shehu , Mrs. Yetunde Johnson, Mrs. Ufuoma Daro, Messrs Tope Fashedemi and Biyi Oladipo, are serving Board members.

The provisions of NIRA’s constitution stipulates that two-third members of the current Executive Board are  to resign and their positions declared vacant prior to the next elections.  This is broken down to at least two officers of the Board, and three members of the Board, underscoring why nomination of candidates to the positions was open for an eight-week period, which closed 21 days prior to the AGM.

This, according to her, makes room for continuity since the entire members of the Board of Directors do not all leave at the same time.
