ABUJA — THE weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting yesterday approved  N250 million for the production of a compendium in commemoration of the golden jubilee of Nigeria’s independence.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting which was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan,
Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili, said the approval followed a memo presented by the chairman of the council.

According to her, “Mr. President presented a memo to council seeking approval for the award of contract for the production of 20,000 copies of 800 pages and 5,000 CD ROM of compendium on Nigeria as part of the 50th independence anniversary celebrations.

“The steering committee on Nigeria at 50 was constituted to arrange, co-ordinate and execute required programmes for a befitting celebration of Nigeria’s 50th Independence anniversary.

“The committee brought a proposal to produce a compendium on Nigeria which was considered and approved by council at its meeting of 20th January 2010.”

The compendium, she stressed, “is intended to highlight the nation’s journey so far, her history, achievements and challenges since independence as well as the people and the nation’s aspirations.”
