A Jos High Court has sentenced a 23-year old to death by hanging for killing his father in cold blood.

The court presided over by Justice Yakubu Dakwak convicted Ibrahim Jafiya on the charge of culpable homicide for shooting to death his father in cold blood on November 14, 2003.

Although Ibrahim pleaded not guilty to the charge, he did not controvert the evidence of the numerous prosecution witnesses who confirmed that he committed the offence.

Delivering judgement, Justice Dakwak said the burden of proof in a criminal case does not only rest on the prosecution but also on the accused to prove his innocence in order not to be convicted.

He said since the convict did not challenge the testimonies of the witnesses, the court was satisfied that he planned and intentionally terminated the life of his father in cold blood and sentenced him accordingly.

It was learnt that the convict shot dead his father, Aliyu Ishaku Jafiya a former Managing Director of Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Company (NAIC) in 2003 at their residence in Jos over some disagreements.
