The Governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has called on teachers to show greater dedication in carrying out their duties.

Dr. Uduaghan at the NUT’s conference in Asaba, described as apt, the theme of the teachers conference, “ The future of a nation depends on today’s investment on the teacher” and added that “ there is a pressing need for more investments to be made on the teacher since it is the quality of knowledge that he/she has that he/she passes to the children”. Therefore he said, “ there is also a dire need for returns on investment made on the teacher”.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Professor Amos Utuama said, “ while the welfare of teachers and in fact, all workers are of paramount importance, I appeal to stakeholders  at this conference , to dwell more on proffering solutions, which are capable of sorting out the serious challenges facing the education sector”.

Sunmonu hits record attendance at ILO

A former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Alhaji Hassan Sunmonu has hit a record of 32 years of regular attendance at the International Labour Conference.

Sunmonu told about 4,000 delegates at the just concluded 99th session of the ILC, “ as a veteran of 32 years regular attendance of the International Labour Conference, it is a matter of pride and joy for me  and the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity ( OATUU) to see the ILO’s voice being raised loud and clear within the United Nations system, the G8 and G20 advocating for a fair globalisation, decent work, social and economic justice”.

Sunmonu who is the executive secretary of OATUU based in Accra, Ghana said “ this advocacy has given the ILO the moral authority that some other international institutions do not have because of their advocacy of neo-liberal financial and economic policies which are responsible for the current global financial and economic crisis”.

He commended the ILO for various capacity building programmes which it had been providing for its tripartite constitutents; workers, employers and government especially at this time of global financial crisis.

Construction union urges states to pay TSS

The president of the National Union of Civil Engineering , Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers, Comrade Samuel Adeoye has called on state governors  defaulting in the payment of the Teachers Salaries Structure pay  to without further delay. Adeoye in a message to the NUT national delegates conference held in Asaba said “ the more the teachers are invested on, the more efforts they put on their jobs and the better for the nation”.

He said education is the foundation block on which “ developing or developed nations stand”.

Adeoye said his union has observed with dismay and “ gross disappointment, infra structural decay in the industry”.

He noted that “ this has contributed to the declining standard of education” and urged governments to pay more attention to the education sector.

Isagua for burial July 3rd

THE burial arrangement for late General Secretary of  Textile Garments and Tailoring Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, TGTSSAN, Comrade Pius Isagua, who died on April 30, 2010 on his way to Abuja for the 2010 May Day celebration.

TGTSSAN’s President, Comrade Yakubu Jekeri, said in Lagos, that Comrade Isagua would be laid to rest on Friday of July 3, 2010, in Edo state.

According to him, the details of burial arrangement as announced by his family includes a service of songs at his Lagos residence flat A6, Ileke Estate,Omorogba Meiran in Lagos on Thursday June17,  2010.

His body will later leave Dr. Okougha Hospital, Uzebba-Iluleha, Owan West LGA, Edo State to his residence for lying-in-state and Christian/ social wake on July 2, 2010 at 7pm till dawn.

While a final funeral service will hold at St peters Anglican Church,Uzebba-Iluleha on Friday July 3,2010 at 10 am, while internment follows immediately at his residence, 48, Oba Road, Uzebba-Iluleha,, Edo state.
